Student Engagement

Student engagement is crucial to the learning process and is something that teachers must learn to encourage in order to be effective in the classroom. There are many helpful strategies that have been proven by scientific research to help teaches engage students. I have chosen three strategies that I feel foster the classroom community, student autonomy, positive social skills and active student engagement.

Talking Sticks- providing students with an equal opportunity to talk during small and large group discussions. This strategy meets the needs of all of my students because it allows each student to have a voice and say in classroom discussions and minimizes distractions because everyone is quiet and looking at the person holding the talking stick.

Teacher Relatedness- refers to how well the teacher creates meaningful relationships in the classroom. I will build quality relationships with my students by: taking a sincere interest in every student, being friendly in various ways, being flexible and focused on learning goal and never give up on my students.

Entry Routine- encourage classroom community, students’ self-esteem, productive social collaboration.  My Entry routines will be simple instructions students complete as they enter the classroom each day.  The routines will be written on the bulletin board and posted in other areas in the classroom.
